The DEFEND Cleveland Show

August 4th, 2011 DC Show Report

Getting a little tired of Jacoby Ellsbury. It’s one thing to see the Tribe dancing around like Jiffy Pop at home plate after a walk off, but two nights in a row from the same guy in Boston and turnabout certainly doesn’t feel like fair play. Especially when it’s Boston. They don’t even know how to properly pronounce Chowder.

Jason Kipnis was up to it again in spite of it all though. It’s now 4 straight games of home runs which makes him the first Indian to do so since Al Rosen in 1950. It’s hard to believe this wasn’t done at some point in the 90’s with all the bats and juice in the lineup but that’s the stat according to Elias. Of course Kipnis has also done this all within his first 10 big league games which makes him the first person to accomplish such a start to his career since Graig Nettles did it for the Twins back in 1968. Jason’s August but three days in is a welcome sight and one this team would welcome all through September as he’s hitting .455 and of his 5 hits, 4 have gone for extra bases (3 HR, 1 double). Nice.

Funny side note on Kipnis. A friend of mine who owns and operates a local restaurant was last week called by an agent for Kipnis. The agent, which is just a kind word for salesman, said “hey friend (agent lingo for I’m about to try and sell you something), I represent Cleveland’s new sensation Jason Kipnis and he and a bunch of his friends would like to come and get a load of free stuff based on his celeb status”. Of course I’m paraphrasing, liberally, but the part of “Cleveland’s new sensation” is quoted word for word.

This seemed silly the beginning of last week when Kipnis had only played in a few games and was hitting below the Mendoza Line, now though…I wonder if the agent is going to call back and up his price. “Hey, this is Jason’s agent again, get out, we now own your place.” And believe that if Jason somehow carries this team into the playoffs I’ll insist he get those keys.

That said, with the team for the first time not sitting above .500 (54-54) since they were only 4 games in back on April 5th, and now that they’re 4 games out of 1st place behind Detroit who’s won three in a row (4 games out is the most out of 1st they’ve been all year), here’s to Justin Masterson handling the Sox tonight so the Indians split this 4 game set before heading to Texas for 3 more. Justin is our ace, this is what he does.

Go Tribe.

PS – Browns had a closed practice yesterday and the only news of sorts to come out was that they brought in Richmond McGee to take over punting duties after Reggie went down for the year from jumping for a snap the other day. McGee was in both the Eagles and Bears camp for the last few years and has connections to Heckert and Chris Tabor (Browns Special Teams Coach) who worked with him with the Bears last year.
