The DEFEND Cleveland Show

Mike James’ Week 6 NFL Picks

As heard on the Defend Cleveland Podcast with Mike and Joe, Mike is currently 13-1-1 for the season in picking 3 NFL games a week against the spread. And his success has totally gone straight to his head. Will he be right again in his picks this week? Will his success only feed his ego even further? You bet.
Arizona -3.5 at Pittsburgh: Word is Big Ben was trying to force that injured MCL of his into action well before any doctor would recommend, and one need only guess the fact that the Bengals look poised to run away with the AFC North at any moment and Ben’s urgency here only makes sense given how poor by comparison Pitt’s offense has looked with Vick filling in. Since Roethlisberger certainly wasn’t going to be close to a 100% if he did play, you have to wonder if his giving it a go would have made that much of a difference regardless. Arizona not only has one of the best overall offensives in the game, they also have one of the game’s best defenses. And it’s a defense whose strength hangs its hat most in pass coverage. According to PFF only Denver has been better in coverage this year, and though the Cards pass rush hasn’t been its strength, you have to think given how much of a gaping hole the loss of Pouncey at center has left the Steelers O-line weakened, Vick’s going to end up being pressured into doing what he so far has avoided these past couple starts, forcing throws and making mistakes. No matter how effective Le’Veon Bell could end up being this week, it’s doubtful anything Pittsburgh can cobble together on the scoreboard will be enough to overcome the barrage of points Palmer and crew are capable of putting up. Cards win by no less than 5, capped with a grinning Bruce Aryans all throughout the post game presser.
Baltimore -2 at SF: If ever you’ve wondered how narrow the margin between a win and a loss in the NFL is, you need look no further than the 1-4 Ravens. Granted, injuries have riddled their roster on both sides of the ball, but even still this team could just as easily be sitting at 4-1 instead of finding themselves in the cellar of their division and coming off of an overtime defeat to a team they hardly ever lose to in the Browns. Meanwhile, sitting on the dock of the bay, SF’s 1-4 record couldn’t be more representative of just how bad they are. Hell, they should consider themselves fortunate they’re not 0-5. Doesn’t this 49ers team remind you a whole lot like the 49ers team before Harbaugh took over? Remember when they had Mike Singletary at wit’s end ripping his pants down during halftime to prove his manhood? Here’s hoping current head coach Jim Tomsula somehow tops that classy moment  in franchise history, because other than that I don’t know what good could come of this season. Seriously, if I were a San Francisco fan right now my biggest concern would be that my team has already reached its win total for the year. Baltimore rolls.
Patriots -9 at Indy: Let’s see here, Luck’s battling back from shoulder injury, the Pats haven’t lost to Indy since 2009, and over their last four match-ups New England has put up 42 points or more in each game to the tune of an astounding 29 point average margin of victory. Yeah, it doesn’t look good for Indy. Not at all. Oh, and then there’s also that little affair called Deflategate to which the Patriots appear to be harboring a bit of resentment over…  Given all these circumstances the Colts better hope anything other than a football game takes place at Lucas Oil Stadium this weekend. Maybe they should challenge the Pats to game of Texas Hold-em instead, or a rigorous tug of war match, even a best of 7 rock-paper-scissors battle might fair somewhat better for them, because at the moment they couldn’t be facing tougher odds against the reigning Champs bent on total league destruction this season to make up for Goodell and the NFL’s continued attempts to taint their legacy, not to mention ruin their summer. I would feel comfortable betting this one all the way up to Patriots -15. That said, I do like the odds Jim Irsay ends up falling off the wagon and is caught mixing booze and pills in his owner’s suite before this one’s over.
