Go Browns – From Germany with Love

I am currently in Germany.  It is very difficult to get timely information about the Browns here.  I think I passed a German newspaper with the headline “Josh McCown Ist Kaput!” but I might have been seeing things.  I didn’t see last Sunday’s game but from what I was able to reconstruct was that the team looked good in the first half and then got their dicks pounded in the dirt in the second half.  The gap in talent between the Browns and good teams is unsettling at best.  This will happen when you miss on every top draft pick since Jim Brown.  From what I gather, it isn’t easy to put a good professional football team together from various stray dogs available on the waiver wire.  Maybe Ray Farmer gets a pass on Manziel as clearly Haslam pointed a pistol at everyone in the draft room to take the guy.  Still, that doesn’t give him a pass on every other pick he has bungled.  It’s probably not good if I could have run a better draft than the Browns just by showing up with a Mel Kiper draft guide, a sixer, and some common sense.  I don’t know what Farmer gets paid, but I don’t think he has hit too many “performance based incentives”.  I wish him well in his next endeavor.
The good news is after the ass kicking on Sunday the Browns get to hop down to Cincinnati and get their ass kicked down there.  My guess is having Haden and Whitner out is going to be a problem in trying to defend AJ Green.  Once again, I haven’t done a “deep dive” on the expectations of Thursday night but my gut reaction is the Undefeated Bengals might be favored to win at home on national TV.  I will try to look it up and make sure.  There’s a lot of soccer news and F1 here so it’s not easy.
The big story will be John Football playing once again.  Rarely does a coaching staff try to limit expectations on a QB like they have with John.  When most teams have their starting QB go down with injury the bullshit rhetoric from the staff is along the lines of, “so and so is ready to play.  All of our players are on this team for a reason.  We know anyone in that locker room can step up.”  Meanwhile, the Browns say things like, “well… Johnny has made a little progress and it seems like at some point in his career we might have limited confidence bringing him in during certain situations if given no other choice.”  He is like that fuck up brother-in-law with diminished expectations.  “We are so excited that John got that job at the gas station.  It has been so nice to provide him with a little structure.”  The ship has sailed on achievement.  Now the hopes are he doesn’t bring shame and dishonor on the family.
I won’t get to see the game Thursday either.  I fully expect to roll back into town with the Browns in the exact same spot they have been in since 1999- a bad roster trying to hang in games with fan discussion focused on the always bright sunshine of Next Year.  2015 is 2008 is 2003 is 1999.  It is as it has always been and will be ever thus.
Go Browns.
